After the Christmas shopping rush, 1948.

Because it’s that time of the year, I recently remembered this recipe my grandmother used to make when I was little. It is called “Winter Salad” and I’ll translate it for you here.

Ingredients:

3-4 kilos of peppers

2 kilos of green tomatoes

2 kilos of onions

2 kilos of carrots

For the sauce:

1 cup of sugar

1 cup of oil

1 cup of vinegar

pepper

1 spoon of salt

bay leafs

allspice

You need to cut all the vegetables and grate the carrots. Add one spoon of salt. All this needs to be downcast in the sauce I told you about before.

Then it has to be stuffed in jars.

A fresh sauce will be poured on top.

And that’s all

It tastes amazing and can be eaten with anything! Enjoy!

Am stat la mansarda o luna.
De-acolo, de sus, de la geam,
Si ziua si noaptea pe luna
Priveam ca la teatru, madam!
Când luna-mi venea la fereastra,
Orasul parea ca ma cheama
Sa-i vad în lumina albastra
Fantastica lui panorama…
Mai sus, într-o camera mica,
Faceau împreuna menaj
Un mos, un actor si-o pisica.
Iar dincolo, jos, la etaj,
O dama cu vizite multe
Si-alaturi de ea un burlac,
Un demon serios de la Culte
Cu cioc si cu ghete de lac.
De-acolo, pe-o vreme ploioasa,
Mi-am pus geamantanu-n tramvai
Si-abia am ajuns pân-acasa:
Pe Berzei, la conu Mihai.

Tin minte si-acuma gradina,
Ferestrele unse cu var…
În fata sta coana Irina
Si-n curte, un fost arhivar.
Vedeai rasarind laolalta,
Un colt luminos de ietac,
Pridvorul cu iedera ‘nalta
Si flori zâmbitoare-n cerdac…
Pe-atunci înflorea liliacul
Si noaptea cadea parfumata
Umplând de miresme cerdacul,
Si-avea arhivarul o fata…
Stam ceasuri întregi sub umbrarul
De flori, asteptând neclintit
(C-avea obicei arhivarul
Sa sforaie noaptea cumplit).
Târziu, când se da la o parte
Perdeaua, parea ca visez…
Si iar am plecat mai departe,
De teama sa nu ma fixez.

Straine privelisti fugare!
Voi nu stiti ca-n inima port
O dulce mireasma de floare,
Parfumul trecutului mort…

Si-am stat la un unchi, pe Romana,
Tiu minte… dar unde n-am stat?
La domnul Manuc, o persoana
Cu nasul putin coroiat;
La doamna Mary, pe Regala
(O, cum ma ruga sa nu plec!
Mi-a scris chiar o carte postala);
Pe strada Unirii la Sbeck;
Pe Grant, lânga birtul lui Sbierea;
Pe Witing, pe Tei la Confort,
M-a dus pretutindeni puterea
Aceluiasi tainic resort.

C-asa mi-e viata – o goana,
Si astfel durerile trec…
Ramâi sanatoasa, cucoana,
Ca-mi iau geamantanul si plec!
